Broke the Guest Column barrier in the Wisconsin State Journal on 6/24/08 with a Guest Editorial I submitted on May 31 under the title above. To save space the Editor, Scott Milfred cut it to “Same old Collectivist Claptrap” which was fair minded. Since this format is new to me I will include it here as I am not sure the “link” will function:

County Executive Falk, County Supervisor Chair McDonell and the “progressive’ majority on the Board advocate the “New Urbanism” of high density housing controlled not locally, but by the County.

“Suburbs are chaotic and depressing agglomeration of buildings covering enormous stretches of land”
Mixed use developments (as opposed to single family houses) “allow easy access to public functions and services – day care, restaurants, parks… transportation”
“High rise housing is more equitable, promotes a sense of community and should be the primary unit” of housing.
“High density housing will allow easy access to public transportation” which is better than private transport which has “produced an overwhelming set of unresolved problems” and the “economic advantages of public transit for getting commuters to and from work areas are obvious and an answer to congestion in the central city”

Do these “New Urbanism-like” statements sound familiar?

Nothing new here, they are from the book, The Ideal Communist City written by the planners at the University of Moscow in 1965. See Randal O’Toole’s book, The Best Laid Plans, 2007, p.171

The USSR went on to build these ‘filing cabinet” apartments at a density of 70,000 people per square mile in Moscow (higher than Manhattan). These apartments and similar ones in the former Communist East Germany have now mostly been vacated, abandoned and torn down, much like the ill advised “Urban Renewal” “planned community” federally funded high rise apartments built in the 50’s-70’s in Chicago, and St Louis that became so crime ridden, residency fell to 35% before they were finally demolished – again using federal grants to do so.

The point: Top down planning by the Central Committee, the Politburo, the Capitol Area Regional Planning Commission, our county board does not work. It worked in a totalitarian, brutally controlled socialist society only as long as the inhabitants had no freedom of choice.

The county leaders appalling lack of trust in our free market system that has created the greatest and richest country in the world and their disdain for local control of zoning shows they dismiss the judgment and intelligence of their own neighbors, citizens, farmers, businessmen, developers, village and town councils in Dane County.

Gadhafi slams Obama

Things are getting tough for Obama. He thought he had the Muslim vote wrapped up when a month or so Hamas (Palestine division) endorsed him in his campaign for President for what they thought were his support for Palestine policies of “Rockets for Israel” program.

Now after B.O. snuggled up to the jewish voters by declaring the U.S. will always support Israel and that Jerusalem should be a unified city under Israelie control, he blew the Islamofascist terrorist support he had won.

Moammar must have read B.O’s first book since he called him out that his pappy was a Kenyan and he should save the money for Israel defense ($30 Billion over 10 years) and build a damn dam in Africa instead! Call it. “The Wrath of KhanMan Gadhafi!”

Dane County Executive Kathernine Falk should read Ayn Rand’s ( Photo above) “Atlas Shrugged”

Katherine Falk had a Guest Editorial in the Wisconsin State Journal this week ( June 9,08) that was a classic CYA snow job. All the reasons why the 911 Center call drop that MAY have caused a death of a Coed was in great shape and why she, by implication, was not responsible in any way for the bungling of the 911 call the Coed made, but was never responded to.

My take: Simple human error by hard working people in a setting that was too noisy and poorly managed. This tragedy was revealed - many others may not have been detected since they don’t have basic and standard monitoring software controls in place. This reminded me of scenes from ATlas Shrugged. Competent people are not drawn to government jobs. People who produce, produce – those who can’t, govern.

At long last I actually read Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged”. The newer edition was close to 1200 pages. (yeah, it would benefit by a sharp editor slashing the size and repetitions). I understand a movie will be coming soon- will it be shown over a two day period?

Rand wrote this between 1945 and 57 and it was published in 1957. Since she endured the Russian revolution and escaped to America to become a writer, her viewpoint of how American Industry was in fact Nationalized during WW II and the aftermath of ever growing Federal laws controlling manufacting “(the looters”) looked a lot like Russia when she was a child. Does this apply to today? Perfectly.

The presidential campaign is a campaign to see who can ‘loot’ the most from the producers, ‘the looters’ are in charge of local, county and state government. In Congress the “excess profits tax” against the Oil producers failed by a small margin this week. This was like a chapter of Atlas Shrugged. Punish the Oil producers for making a profit by taxing it at an even higher rate even though all that would happen would they would raise the price of gas to pay the “excess profits tax”. Actual profit margins in many other companies is much higher that the capital investment heavy Oil biz, but logic is suspended for Congress.

The “looters,” the politicians and the public who produce nothing but hot air and regulations to restrict free enterprise are more in charge locally and nationally than in 1957.

It seems the majority of people in Dane county governing positions- city council, board of supervisor -either work for the government, or a non profit. There are so few people that actually produce. They produce a product, or a service and compete with others to win the consumer. Of the 37 Board of Supervisors I can think of only a half dozen that produce or provide a service- rental housing, runnig a bar, provide accounting service, etc.

The ‘Atlas’; is the entrepenuerial man/woman who risks all to build a new lighter stronger steel as well as the grand dauthter of the man who built the first cross continental railroad. Punishing the producers and rewarding the Looters eventually means Atlas Shrugged and disappeared to a hidden Colorado location to let the country looters consume itself since all the finest producers quit producing.
